Design Challenge:
To design a shaded train stop along a private quarter-scale railroad, incorporating materials and design elements consistent with other buildings on the property.
Physical Context:
Located on a rural residential estate in Sonoma County, the train stop sits adjacent to the main residence and serves as the primary station for the owner’s quarter-scale steam engine.
Solution:
The shade structure draws inspiration from traditional railway architecture, featuring heavy timber framing and stone detailing that echo the design language of other buildings on the property. A copper roof, exposed structural brackets, stone post bases, and custom specialty lighting add to its authenticity and charm. The result is a beautifully crafted stop that feels both nostalgic and integrated into the estate’s overall aesthetic.
