Kamen Residence

Sonoma, California

Design Challenge:

The client envisioned a minimalist, light-filled home that harmonized with the serene beauty of its surroundings. They wanted a space with heart and soul, inspired by Eastern aesthetics—a healthy, mindful retreat offering unobstructed views of the surrounding hilly vineyards and the distant San Francisco Bay.

Physical Context:

Perched on 300 acres of rugged, ancient terrain with a 50-acre vineyard, the site is reached via a winding, narrow road. The house sits atop a gentle knoll just below a dramatic ridgeline in the Moon Mountain District, a renowned grape-growing region overlooking Sonoma Valley and the San Francisco Bay.

Solution:

This modern vineyard residence takes inspiration from Japanese pagoda rooflines, using a rich material palette of low-carbon rammed earth, weather-resistant corten steel, renewable wood, and high-performance glass. Designed to blend seamlessly with the rugged terrain, the one-bedroom home is a series of interlocking forms, thoughtfully arranged to frame breathtaking views while complementing the natural beauty of its surroundings.
